Bridges to Independence (Bridges) is a 501c3 nonprofit based in Arlington, VA, whose mission is to lead individuals and families out of homelessness and into stable, independent futures. Founded in 1985, Bridges to Independence programming focuses on stabilization (from homeless to hopeful), employment (from minimal to livable wage), and prevention (breaking the cycle of poverty) for homeless families to build a bridge to self-sufficiency.
Bridges operates Arlington County's largest emergency family shelter and provides many supportive services to families that include housing placement, financial empowerment, youth development, and workforce development. Support is available for every family member – adults and children alike. Our short-term goal is to meet each individual where they are and empower them with the tools to move forward to self sufficiency. Long-term, Bridges aims to break the intergenerational cycles of poverty by preparing today’s struggling youth to become tomorrow’s successful adults.
This year, Bridges celebrates 35 years of service in the community, and you can help that work continue, especially during these challenging times. At the start of the pandemic, Bridges saw approximately 85% unemployment in families served. While Bridges has covered 100% of families rent from April through September, the rent subsidies will run out without your help. You can help. Register today to keep a family from eviction during these challenging times.
